Panama, officially known as the Republic of Panama, is the southernmost country of Central America, situated on an isthmus. Panama borders Colombia, Costa Rica, the Caribbean and the Pacific Ocean. Panama City, the capital of the country, is situated on the Pacific Coast. The city is also the principle commercial center of the country.
Panama City is a curious blend of old Spain, modern America and the bazaar atmosphere of the East. It is the largest city on the Pacific coast in the central zone. The city has the most advanced and successful International Banking Center in Latin America. More than 100 banks from over 32 countries have their offices in this city; offering wide range of services to the invertors, traders, corporations and individuals. The city also possesses an advanced technical infrastructure to support its booming service sector and the real estate industry.
The city has all the features that a luxurious, first world city needs to possess. Its nightlife, duty-free shopping centers, casinos, belly dancing halls, classical theatre and numerous sporting activities including golf and long tennis delight the locals and the tourists. Additionally, the city offers world-class deep sea, lake fishing and bird watching – the life never gets bored here.
In the last couples of years, Panama City has developed itself into a cosmopolitan modern metropolis. Exclusive residential areas have been built in Costa del Este, Coco del Mar, San Francisco, Balboa Avenue, Punta Paitilla, Punta Pacifica and in Marbella area. All these places offer a good range of condominiums and apartments to the interested property buyers.
The history of Panama City is quite rich. The history actually dates back to the 16th century when infamous pirate, Henry Morgan sacked the Panama City (today, known as Old Panama). During Spanish colonial days, rulers shifted the capital to Casco Viejo, which is now a part of the present capital. Replete with historical ruins, Old Panama and the 17th century Casco Viejo section of the city are must-sees for those who want to explore the spectacular history. The world-famous Panama Canal is only about 40 minutes away from the capital.
The population in Panama City is mostly urban. Spanish is the official language but many speak English as well. Majority of the population of the city is Roman Catholic though a large number of Protestants live here as well. The population is a melting pot of nationalities including Spanish, Indigenous, Chinese and West Indian.
