The Republic of China has donated a total of $5 million to Panama for the purposes of completion of a water supply system, as well as the renovation of a highway. The donation was received by Rafael Mezquita, the Minister of the Presidency, who expressed gratitude and confirmed that the Taiwanese government has continually extended support over a variety of areas under President Torrijos administration. Termed as a staunch sponsor of Panama, Taiwan has made significant donations in the areas of economy, education, society and culture.

Mezquita confirmed that all donations are handled in a transparent way, with the funds going directly to the National Treasury, which are in turn distributed via the regulatory and Parliamentary processes that exist, all of which are duly audited.

The latest donation will be split up into a $2 million portion for the renovation of an 84-km highway linking the western harbor of Puerto Bayano and the Agua Fria township; whilst the remaining $3 million is earmarked for the installation of water pipes for the city of La Chorrera in western Panama, this initiative will improve access to clean water for 250,000 citizens. Both of these projects are a collaborative effort by both the Panama and Taiwan governments, which started in 2007.
