Panama reaffirms its withdrawal from Central American Parliament
Panama’s Foreign Ministry has confirmed their intention of withdrawing from the Central American Parliament, based on the reasoning that the statutory group has not really contributed anything value in terms of addressing region specific problems within Central America.
The Foreign Minister, of Panama, Mr. Juan Carlos Varela has submitted the letter of intent to the Secretary General of the Central American Parliament and has further informed fellow member state representatives of Panama’s intention of withdrawal, the approval of withdrawal must be provided by member states within 90 days of such intention and confirmation of withdrawal.
Panama, as a member must contribute no less than 1,7 million US Dollars annually towards the running costs of the Parliament, which is made up of six member states, with its current base of operations in Guatemala City. The withdrawal or resignation of Panama from this consultative body is strongly supported by the residents of Panama, according to the Foreign Ministry.
