Panama Leads the world in Aquaculture

Saturday, April 4, 2009 13:44

Panama is ahead in developing fish and other seafood in the open ocean. Known as aquaculture, this technique is hailed as a sustainable alternative to overfishing the world’s seas and oceans.

Panama’s projects are however different in comparison to the well known ‘land ponds’, with this system rather using cages in the ocean as a means of cultivating various species of fish and marine life. The main benefit is that the cages provide more of a natural habitat for the fish, in that they are actually set into the sea.

The project has three cages at present, submerged 30 feet below sea level in Puerto Lindo, Colón, and provides shelter to 46,000 cobias. Additional cages are ready for installation, and await the transfer of cultures. After a year of life, when they weigh in at about 30 pounds, the species are ready to be harvested and provided to the market.
