Amount of new hotels insufficient

The number of new hotels in Panama, opened in 2008, amounted to 25 – accounting for a $25,5 million investment which provided an additional 561 rooms containing 935 beds. These projects have also generated a total of 309 jobs.

According to Carl-Frederik Nordstrom from the Tourism Authority of Panama (ATP), this amount, together with the existing facilities, are not enough based on the increase ion tourism experienced by Panama. Jorge Loaiza of the Panama Association of Hotels has confirmed this sentiment, although the increased flow of tourists into Panama has resulted in high hotel occupancy rates. Hotels in Panama City experienced an 80% occupancy rate, and on a national level this rate was 68%.

Up until the end of August 2008, there were plans for an additional 22,227 rooms to be incorporated in new hotels, which represented an investment of over $3,6 billion, according to the ATP.
