Panama City’s Ancon Hill

A symbol of the capital, Panama City, Ancon Hill is not merely a well known landmark located in the middle of the metropolitan area but is actually a haven for wildlife, and a symbol of what once was a struggle for freedom between Panama and the United States. Bordering on Ancon Hill is the Avenue of Martyrs, named in honor of the students who attempted to raise a Panamanian flag at a school located in the Canal Zone in 1964 and were subsequently shot by the US troops stationed there, the area at the time was off limits to Panamanians.
Today the largest flag in the country flies proud over the mother city, having been hoisted in 2000 when the control of the Panama Canal was handed back to Panama and her people, by the United States. The flag is no smaller than a basketball court, and stands proud atop Ancon, symbolizing the pride of the city, and country as a whole.
Ancon Hill stands 200m above sea level and is the highest point in Panama City, on top of the hill one experiences magnificent panoramic views of all aspects of Panama City life. From the Miraflores locks, to the Bridge of the America’s, and the numerous vessels entering and exiting the Canal are all visible from atop Ancon, and visibility and weather permitting you may even be able to see Centennial Bridge.
If you want to get to the top of Ancon, you can access this green area by foot from the Mi Pueblito foot path or via car access from the Quarry Heights access point. By foot is recommended as you will get to experience the natural beauty and wildlife that are resident here. The walk will only take 35 minutes and makes a nice break from the norm of travelling in the car.
Recent proposals for the development of a cable car system for Ancon were fought by environmentalists, as subsequently declined by the authorities, which has thankfully saved this beautiful inner city green area. With the Hill receiving National Heritage status in 2003, it will surely be kept safe and sound.
A variety of bird life can be enjoyed whilst walking or even resting on the benches and is most certainly well worth the walk and experience, whether you reside in Panama City or are a national or international visitor to Panama City.
