Panama Canal Toll Increase to go ahead

Thursday, February 19, 2009 16:53

Despite the current economic situation as well as many request for the Panama Canal toll increases to be frozen, as well as some shipping lines electing to reroute their ships away from the Panama Canal. The CMA CGM line has decided to route their line around Africa on the return journey from Asia, advising that they will save over $200,000 across the fleet. The Maersk line is also considering rerouting some of their vessels around Africa, as well as around the South American Cape Horn.

The scheduled increase was decided upon, in consultation with the industry as far back as 2006, according Rodolfo Sabonge – the ACP’s Director of Corporate Planning and Marketing. This is the final installment of a 3 year implementation of toll increases and is set to take effect on May 1, 2009. The increase will bring the toll to $72 per TEU, a 14.3 percent increase over the current toll of $63.
