Panama Canada Free Trade Negotiations

The Panamanian delegation for trade talks with Canada is pleased with progress being mad in the free trade talks being held in Ottawa at the end of October. Canada and Panama have been engaging in talks since May, where meetings have taken place in May and July of this year in Ottawa and Panama respectively.

Romy Vasquez, the Panamanian Ambassador has been pushing for these talks and agreement since arriving in Canada in 2005. Parallel business processes have been indientified in both Panama and Canada’s conservative banking sectors.

Ms Vasquez is attempting to promote more free movement of citizens between the countries via the free trade agreement, encouraging Canadian companies to utilise Panama as a launching pad for trade in the region.

Although negotiations are still underway, Ms Vasquez is positive that the Stockwell Day, the new Canadian trade minister, is supportive of the Free Trade Agreement. The next round of talks is scheduled for December in Panama.
