Panama: A Perfect Paradise for Europeans

Friday, October 24, 2008 6:59

Europeans are always on the search for something new and contemptible to bring back to their home.  Recently, they have discovered Panama real estate and are setting their sights on it.  This is nothing new – Spaniards wanted Panama for its gold and the French for the canal – Europeans are just one of the many people interested to have a piece of this paradise. Panama has seen the influx of European investors and will see more in the near future.

Panama real estate has been slowly rising since the late 90’s.  Investors from other countries have seen its promise and potential.  But the recent increase of European investors is all thanks to the slumping of the US dollar.  Panama is using US currency and many Europeans see this as a one-time opportunity.    Shopping in Panama, whether for designer clothes or for real estate, is much cheaper when compared to home.

In Europe, the competition for both personal and business sectors is so strong and tight that Europeans just can’t take it anymore and opt to leave for a much calmer, relaxing place.  Also, the manufacturing wages and energy cost are much lower in Panama, so small and large businesses are tempted to relocate in this so-called paradise.

Panama is populated with Europeans now.  You can see it in the number of real estate sales to Europeans, in restaurants and in malls where their clothes are a dead giveaway.  Still not convinced? The tour buses full of tourists arriving at Panama’s landmarks and the invasion of gelled hair, dressed in a Euro-chic fashion barhopping and dancing in clubs should do the job.

Why not? Aside from Euros strong currency against the US dollar, Panama is the newest tax haven.  They have laws that protect offshore refuge and keeping their bank accounts off the blip of foreign radars.  Also, Panama is like another home to Europeans, with open plazas and French/Spanish architecture – Panama seems to echo Europe of yesterday – that is when the prices were still affordable.  Major airlines are now offering more direct flights from Europe to Panama and back.

Because of the great interest that Europeans have been giving Panama real estate, the prices have gone higher these past few months.  Though many locals and other investors who are familiar with the market have been somewhat turned off – the price has not fazed the European market.  In fact, they are still heavily fueling Panama’s real estate boom.  Though, Europeans are not only interested in Panama alone, they are also interested in other thriving markets like Singapore, Shanghai, Istanbul and Moscow.

Panama is at its busiest. The rise of giant buildings, influx of massive immigration and ostentatious real estate forecasts – truly a whirlwind of crazy activity.  Soon, racing sneakers, big sunglasses and sexy accents will fill the sands of Panama. While many have predicted this influx, no one expected it to be this heavy and so soon.  Panama’s real estate is set to walk in its golden phase of prosperity.
