Obama urged to fast track Trade Agreements

A leading business group has urged President elect Barack Obama to reinvigorate the trade talks, negotiations and related issues with regard to trade agreements with the Latin American and Caribbean countries.

Eric Farnsworth of the Council of the Americas states that these suggested actions will have a great effect on the relations of these countries as well as the atmosphere within the regional trade area. The group has also urged the president elect to facilitate and generate goodwill in the region by appointing a special White House envoy for the Americas. Further suggestions by the group include the approval of the FTAs with Colombia and Panama, prior to the Summit of the Americas, which takes place in mid April.

Although Obama has stressed that Colombia needs to take action, in terms of their current history of trade unionists, and their human rights as well as the number of trade unionists being murdered. And although the FTA with Panama is far less controversial and complicated, current speculation suggests that the priority lies with internal economic stimulus programs rather than that of trade agreements and pacts.
