Nata, Panama – The Hidden Historical Gem

Nata is located in the Cocle Province of Panama, and is situated on the InterAmerican Highway between two of the largest towns of the Cocle Province, namely that of Penonomé and Aguadulce, also located on the highway. Nata is actually one of the oldest towns in Panama, having being established in 1622, and is home to one of the oldest surviving churches of the new world.

The region was originally settled by the Spanish and the current population is estimated at 6,000 residents, with a quaint village like setting including an array of stores and restaurants. Nata can be reached via bus from Panama City, on the Aguadulce bus, remember to ask to be dropped off at Nata, or you can access the town with your own vehicle, as it is easily accessible. Prepare yourself for a hot and sometimes humid climate, with consistent afternoon rains, especially in the rainy season, as the region has the typical lowland climate of Panama.

When in the town you can visit the old church, which is located in the center of town, and can be easily spotted by its white spire, or you could ask one of the locals to point you in the right direction. You will note that the church is in great condition, as it is a National Historic Landmark, as well as the fact that the local residents are proud of the establishment and continually maintain the building. There are regular Catholic services, held daily, as well as festivals being held on occasion.
