Panama’s Internet Access below region average
The average household access to the internet for Latin America and the Caribbean was measured at 22%, however Panama’s sits at 8,2% – far below the regions average. This is according to World Internet Statistics, which is highly contested by Cable & Wireless Internet, as well as the National Authority of Public Services who claim that the internet penetration in households is at least 16% and 22, 3% respectively.
Luis Chamorro, of the Public Services Authority, agrees that the fact that people do not have a PC at home may affect these figures, hwoever the initiative of the govern, ment under Moscoso, as well as the continued drive by the Torrijos administration, have seen a substantial increase in the opening of internet cafes, as well as the continued government support to the entrepreneurs opening such facilities. There are currently 125 internet cafes in operation, which have helped to bridge the so called digital divide according to Maria Jimenez who is in charge of the program oversight.
