Hydroponics gardening in Chiriqui

The Chiriqui Province is already very well known for its rich and fertile soil providing produce of exceptional quality, the fertile soil from the Baru Volcano consistently providing some of the best vegetables available. However the hydroponic way of producing vegetables and other produce has taken off amongst some of the producers within the region.

Pilones de Boquete SA, have established a thriving 2000 sq. m green house where lettuces are planted, not in soil, but in pvc pipes through which a high nutrient water flows through providing a superior source of nourishment for the plants. The company was originally started as a supplier of seedlings to the vegetable producing farmers, however many of these customers were lost to the real estate boom in the area, whereby many producers had sold off their land to investors in the region who were buying up land in the area, in 2004.

Husband and wife team, Guillermo and Dioselina decided to take the risk and extend into hydroponics, and having extended their greenhouse space they pioneered the hydroponic fresh produce items such as lettuce and today they supplier premium products to surrounding markets and supermarket chains such as Riba Smith, Romero and Rey, as well as a variety of top range hotels and restaurants including the likes of the Veneto and Bristol, Rancha de Caldero and Ma Cuisine to name but a few.

In addition to the huge variety and range lettuce that is grown by Guillermo and his wife, is that of a range of no less than 21 different herbs, all grown hydroponically. The lettuce types that are being grown include the Romana, Romana Roja, Boston (or Mantequilla), Japonesa, Escarola, Swiss Chard, Lollo Rosa, Green Oak Leaf, Red Oak Leaf and Microgreen varieties. The couple are further seeking to expand upon their hydroponic produce offerings.
