Bilateral Talks precede Pathways to Prosperity in Americas Meeting

Panama’s President Torrijos and US Secretary of State Condoleeza Rice are scheduled for bilateral talks to discuss issues of common interest between the two countries.

The Ministerial meeting of the Pathways to Prosperity in the Americas initiative is based around encouraging greater economic cooperation and economic growth in the region. The meeting will bring together foreign affairs and commerce ministers from 12 participating countries in the Western Hemisphere.

The goals of this initiative include:

 To increase international trade in the Americas, to benefit all citizens;
 Promotion of regional trade, to compete with Asian countries and the rest of the world;
 Expansion of job creation initiatives, as well as regional economic development;
 Enhancement of labor and environmental issues;
 Encourage public/private partnerships to enhance and contribute to these common goals.

The countries represented at this meeting include Panama, the United States, El Salvador, Peru, Chile, Canada, Costa Rica, Guatemala, Honduras, Colombia, Dominican Republic, and Mexico.
