In the drive for increasing the agrotourism awareness and experience for visitors to Panama, a further 12 farms received certification to enable them to accommodate and receive tourists, from the Ministry of Agricultural Development.

Some criteria in the certification process include safety training and systems, as well as having sufficient potable water on the farm, amongst other requirements.

The concept of Agrotourism has been confirmed to be included in the 2009 marketing budget by the Panama Tourism Authority and will be included in the marketing plans and promotions.

The addition of this type of tourism will add much needed cash into the troubled agricultural areas that battle with extremely high production and distribution costs. A total of 20 farms are certified for the agrotourism program and a growth plan envisages another 30 by the end of April 2009.
